Tyco, Talgo trucks and horn/hook couplers...

In May, 1967 they were not considered anathema but a legitimate solution to rolling abilities and coupling issues. While truck mounted couplers soon showed themselves to be less than desirable---the forces of pushing and pulling a train are applied to the truck and not to the car body, making them prone to derailment---the horn/hook became an industry standard and is still found on 85% of new HO rolling stock sold today.
