I didn't get it quite: WHAT blew up? The boiler? Or did you melt a solder joint somewhere?
Most important: I hope that nobody was hurt!
And yes: This ain't the right way to heat up a boiler...

The boiler blew, most likely right at the solder joint. It was posted on the live steam forum I am a part of---I wasn't there. If you listen, you can tell trouble was coming when one of the guys remarked about tweeking the pressure relief valve...not wise.
